Cops chase Amish boy in horse and buggy

Levi E. Detweiler, 17, was charged with alcohol possession and 'overdriving an animal'

LEON, NY — An Amish teen was charged with alcohol possession and "overdriving an animal" after crashing a horse and buggy while fleeing police in New York, officials say.

Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies allege Levi E. Detweiler, 17, ran a stop sign 1:30 a.m. July 12 and refused officers' commands to stop his buggy, The Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported Monday.

Deputies pursued Detweiler for almost a mile before the teen careened into a ditch after making too sharp of a turn into a driveway. Detweiler ran away but was later found in the area, the News said.

He has been charged with possession of alcohol by someone under 21, overdriving an animal, second degree reckless endangerment, failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

The teenager is free on $500 bail, the newspaper said.
