Russia, U.S.: Joint Effort To Build Aircraft Possible October 5, 2010


Russia and the United States are studying the possibility of jointly building a heavy military cargo aircraft, Russian Defense Minister Anatoli Serdyukov said on Oct. 5, Xinhua reported. The plan would be based on the Russian AN-124 and the American C-5, Serdyukov said. He and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates have discussed the project, he said, adding that Gates favored technical cooperation. Russia plans to provide a list of technologies and equipment it is interested in, according to Serdyukov.

Iran: Worm Is Western Plot - Foreign Ministry October 5, 2010


The Iranian Foreign Ministry has said that a computer worm found on the laptops of several employees at the country’s nuclear power plant is part of a Western plot to derail the Iranian nuclear program, AP reported Oct. 5. A ministry spokesman said the plot will not affect Tehran’s nuclear plans. The spokesman’s statements were Iran’s strongest to date about the infiltration.

Afghanistan: ISAF Choosing Alternate Route For Supplies October 6, 2010


The International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan will use an alternate supply route from Russia and Central Asia to bypass the main supply routes through Pakistan, The News reported Oct. 6. Also, Islamabad has called for $600 million for compensation to use the country’s road network. The U.S. Central Command’s decision was based on Pakistan’s refusal to give a timeline on the resumption of the NATO supplies at the Torkham border, according to unnamed diplomatic sources. The alternate route will carry supplies from Riga, Latvia, through Russia, around the Caspian Sea, through Kazakhstan and south through Uzbekistan.

Pakistan: 152 NATO Trailers, Oil Tankers Detained October 6, 2010


Pakistan Customs detained 152 trailers and oil tankers carrying supplies and fuel for NATO forces in Afghanistan after officials detected document tampering, Dawn News reported Oct. 6. The NATO supply documents in question were presented at a customs checkpoint in Chaman, where the trailers and oil tankers are now being held. U.S. officials in Pakistan approached customs officials Oct. 5 with a request to release the trailers and tankers, but were told they would not be allowed to go to Afghanistan until the documents were cleared.

Mexico: Navy Captures 17 Alleged Cartel Members October 5, 2010


The Mexican navy captured 17 alleged members of the Gulf Cartel during an operation in Matamoros, Tamaulipas state, El Universal reported Oct. 5. The navy also seized at least 100,000 rounds of ammunition, military-style camouflage uniforms and 42 vehicles. At least six of the detained individuals claimed to belong to various local police groups.

Ecuador: Military Wages Raised October 5, 2010


Ecuador will raise wages for its armed forces by up to $35 million annually, according to Defense Minister Javier Ponce, Reuters  reported Oct. 5. Ponce said it was a coincidence that the wage increase happened just two days after an assault on President Rafael Correa.
