Russia: Umarov Survival Unknown April 9, 2011
It is unknown whether Russian North Caucasus militant leader Doku Umarov is dead or alive after the March 25 raid in Ingushetia, the republic’s prosecutor Yuri Turygin stated April 9, Itar-Tass reported. The investigation continues, including the militant corpse identification and molecular-genetic examination of the bodies and body parts, Turygin said, adding a recent Umarov call to Freedom Radio was a militant ploy.

Israel: Iron Dome Intercepts Gaza Rocket Fire April 7, 2011
For the first time, the Iron Dome missile defense system has intercepted a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, Ynet reported April 7, citing Israel News. The intercepted rocket was one of three Qassams fired in the direction of the Ashkelon Beach Regional Council and the south of the city of Ashkelon.
Israel: More Funding For Iron Dome Requested April 9, 2011
Israel’s Ministerial Committee on Procurement will in the coming days consider the defense establishment request to order four more Iron Dome batteries for $205 million, Voice of Israel reported April 9. Israel expects the United States to fund the purchase through special aid in addition to the normal military aid. Iron Dome has intercepted five rockets fired at Beersheba, Ashkelon and Kiryat Gat in the past 24 hours.

U.S.: Al Qaeda Numbers Decline In Afghanistan - Petraeus April 9, 2011
There are fewer than 100 al Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan, according to a general assessment, U.S. Gen. David Petraeus stated in Kabul on April 9, AP reported. Al Qaeda is exploring safe havens in Nuristan and Kunar provinces, Petraeus said, adding he is committed to staying in Afghanistan until cold weather sets in and insurgent activity typically slows.

Libya: NATO Mistakenly Hits Rebel Forces - Rebel Leader April 7, 2011
The head of rebel forces in eastern Libya and former Interior Minister Abdel Fattah Younes said he would like answers from NATO regarding a possible case of friendly fire that occurred April 7, Reuters reported. Younes said there were two trainers from Qatar who had been teaching rebels to use anti-tank missiles and other weapons. Rebels brought 20 tanks out of storage and were advancing with them along the coastal desert strip that divides Ajdabiya and Brega when they were hit. Younes said he assumes it was NATO by mistake.
Libya: Weather, Missile Systems Produce Stalemate - U.S. Official April 7, 2011
Recent bad weather in Libya and threats from Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s mobile surface-to-air missile systems have hampered efforts to use the AC-130 and A-10 aircraft as air support for rebel ground forces and contributed to the stalemate, U.S. Gen. Carter Ham, commander of U.S. Africa Command, said April 7, AP reported. Ham said the conditions include as many as 20,000 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and that he believes some Arab nations are beginning to provide training or weapons to the rebels.

Saudi Arabia: Request For Price For Ships Sent To U.S. Navy April 8, 2011
Saudi Arabia has asked the United States for price quotes for surface warships with integrated air and missile defenses, patrol craft, shore infrastructure and helicopters, Reuters reported April 8, citing a statement from the U.S. Navy. U.S. Navy spokeswoman Capt. Cate Mueller told Reuters the Navy is preparing a rough estimate that could be delivered as soon as May.

Mexico: Zeta Linked To U.S. Agent DeathApril 5, 2011
Mexican federal police officers arrested suspected Los Zetas member Jose Manuel Garcia Soto on April 2 for allegedly being linked to the death of a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agent in February, El Universal reported April 5. Garcia Soto was arrested with five suspected criminals. Four kidnap victims were freed during the raid.
