U.S.: Cyberattacks Constitute Acts Of War - Pentagon May 31, 2011

The Pentagon on May 31 adopted a new strategy that will classify major cyberattacks as acts of war, meaning the United States for the first time can respond to such acts with traditional military force, The Wall Street Journal and AFP reported. The Pentagon’s first formal cyber strategy concludes that the Laws of Armed Conflict apply to cyberspace, according to three defense officials who have read the document.

Russia: MiG-29K Jets Delivered To Indian Navy May 31, 2011

The Russian MiG Aircraft Corporation has delivered five MiG-29K fighter jets to the Indian navy, to join four others, which India will use for the new “Black Panthers” squadron, Press Trust of India reported May 31. The jets will be deployed on the INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier, under re-fit in Russia.

Afghanistan: Russia Will Help Train Afghan Pilots June 1, 2011

The Russian government will provide ground support and training for Afghan military transport helicopters, DPA reported June 1, citing an interview in Kommersant magazine with Viacheslav Dzerkalin, vice director of Russia’s Federal Service of Military Trade and Cooperation. A government fund will pay for Russian technicians to maintain 31 Mi-17 helicopters and train Afghan pilots and crew, and for spare parts and upgrades.

Saudi Arabia: 16 Nuclear Reactors To Be Built - Energy OfficialJune 1, 2011

Saudi Arabia plans to build 16 civilian nuclear reactors that cost 300 billion riyals ($80 billion) in the next 20 years, an energy official said June 1 at the Gulf Environment Forum in Jeddah, AFP reported. According to the official, the reactors will be used to generate electricity and desalinate sea water. The first two reactors will be completed in 10 years, the official said, adding that two reactors will be completed each year after. All 16 will be completed by 2030, he said.

Colombia: FARC Member Captured In Venezuela June 1, 2011

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said June 1 that a Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) general staff member, Guillermo Torres (aka Julian Conrado), had been captured on May 30 in Venezuela with the cooperation of Venezuelan authorities, W Radio and AP reported. The United States had offered a $2.5 million reward for his capture. Santos said that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had informed his government that Torres would be sent to Colombia.
