June 7, San Antonio Express-News – (Texas) Cop accused of lying about citizenship to join FBI. A Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas police officer who wanted to join the FBI has been charged with lying about his citizenship to get a job there. The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) opened a full-blown investigation last year of the 30year-old, for his “aggressiveness” in wanting to join the FBI, and his e-mailed request to the agency seeking to attend weapons of mass destruction training being taught by the JTTF, according to a criminal complaint affidavit unsealed June 6. The Iranian-born officer, now a U.S. citizen, was taken to federal court in San Antonio June 3 on a charge of making false statements about his citizenship to get a job in law enforcement. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bond following a hearing before a U.S. magistrate judge. If convicted, he could face up to 5 years in prison. Iraq: Hundreds Protest In Cities June 10, 2011

Hundreds of Iraqis protested in the streets of Iraq’s cities with two separate demonstrations in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square, AFP reported June 10. About 400 demonstrators in Tahrir Square protested for better government services while more than 3,000 protesters called for the execution of 25 accused insurgents. Large numbers of Iraqi security forces deployed, closing off the square to traffic. Hundreds of anti-government protesters rallied in Hilla and dozens were reported in Basra. Vehicle traffic has been banned by authorities in Tikrit city and Diyala province.

Iraq: 1,000 Al Qaeda Militants Remain - CIA June 9, 2011

There are still 1,000 al Qaeda militants in Iraq and the situation in the country remains fragile, CIA Director Leon Panetta told the U.S. Senate on June 9, Reuters reported. Panetta said the United States should do whatever is necessary to preserve its progress in Iraq.

Georgia: Additional Troops To Be Deployed To Afghanistan June 9, 2011

Georgia will deploy another battalion to Afghanistan in 2012, the Georgian Defense Ministry announced June 9, Civil Georgia reported. NATO defense ministers were meeting in Brussels with non-NATO nations that contributed to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Georgian Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia and U.S. Gen. David Petraeus discussed the announcement, which Petraeus welcomed.

Norway: Pullout From Libya Planned By August - DM June 10, 2011

Norwegian Defense Minister Grete Faremo said on June 10 that the country will scale down its fighter jet participation in Libya from six to four planes and withdraw completely by Aug. 1, AP reported. She said she anticipates that Norway’s NATO allies will understand because that country has a small air force, and cannot contribute in a major way over a long period of time.

Libya: Australia To Recognize National Transitional Council June 9, 2011

Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd is scheduled to announce June 9 his government’s recognition of the rebel National Transitional Council as the legitimate Libyan government, SMH reported. An Australian government delegation is scheduled to meet with council representatives in Benghazi, Libya, in July to discuss ways to help the rebel government.
Saudi Arabia: Five Women Arrested For Driving June 9, 2011

Police in Saudi Arabia arrested five women June 9 for breaking the ban on female drivers, one woman said, AFP reported. They were arrested north of Riyadh in the Hettein district while they were practicing to drive three cars in an empty plot, she said. The women, all between 20 and 30, were taken to the police station on Sahafa Street. The woman said they did not break the law because they were not driving on the road.
