Iran: Muslim Brotherhood Connection Used To Influence Egypt - Israeil Intelligence Chief July 5, 2011

Iran is attempting to influence the political process in Egypt through its efforts to connect with the Muslim Brotherhood, Israeli military intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi said during a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting July 5, Ynet reported. The Muslim Brotherhood is pushing for elections in Egypt because it is the only group that is ready for elections, Kochavi said. The international community is trying to delay the elections so moderate groups can become organized, he said. Kochavi said the Egyptian army is losing control of the Sinai.

Iraq: 10,000 Troops Available After Dec. 31 Withdrawal - U.S. officials July 5, 2011

Washington offered to retain between 8,500 and 10,000 troops in Iraq for security forces training after the Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline, U.S. officials said, AP reported July 5. White House national security spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a July 5 email statement that there are currently no plans to keep U.S. troops in Iraq after Dec. 31, but that any such request by the Iraqi government will get serious consideration.

Israel: Settlement Plans Move Forward July 4, 2011

The Jerusalem city planning commission approved an Israeli plan to build 900 new homes in the West Bank settlement of Gilo, a council member said July 4, Reuters reported. Proposals must be approved by Israel’s Interior Ministry and construction would likely begin within a year or two, according to the council member.

AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan: 800 U.S. Troops To Withdraw In July - U.S. Official July 6, 2011

The drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan will begin with the departure of 800 National Guard troops in July, followed by 800 Marines in the fall, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. David Rodriquez said July 6, Reuters reported. Rodriguez said the United States will thin out the troops in the south first and then focus more of its energy in the east. Rodriguez said it was too early to guess when further drawdowns will occur.

Egypt: Protesters Storm Police Headquarters July 6, 2011

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside police headquarters in Suez after a Cairo court upheld a decision to release police officers accused of killing protesters Jan. 25 and 28, Ahram Online reported. Some protesters tried to climb the walls of the Suez court building while others threw stones at the police headquarters, which police personnel threw back at the protesters. Military police surrounded the area but have not interfered in the clashes.

Egypt: Hundreds Of Police Will Be Fired - Interior Minister July 6, 2011

Hundreds of high-ranking Egyptian police officers will be fired July 14 for their role in the crackdown on anti-government protests in early 2011, Interior Minister Mansour el-Essawy said July 6, AP reported. El-Essawy said the shakeup would be the largest in the history of his ministry. El-Essawy also ordered an investigation into the deaths of nearly 850 protesters caused by police during the uprising.

Egypt: MB To Participate In Demonstration July 6, 2011

The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood plans to participate on July 8 in the Persistence Friday demonstration at Cairo’s Tahrir Square, Ikhwanonline reported on July 6. The group cited as reasons the call for a constitution first; treatment of families of whom it called martyrs; and lax prosecution of those formerly in power, including the release of officers accused of killing martyrs. The Coalition of Salafi Youth will also participate in the demonstration, while Essam Derbala, chief of Jamaa Islamiya’s shura, said that group will not participate, Ahram Online reported.

Germany: Saudi Arabia Buys Tanks July 4, 2011

Saudi Arabia bought 44 Leopard tanks from Germany in a multi-billion euro deal, according to Saudi security sources, Reuters reported July 4. Saudi Arabia plans to acquire a total of 200 tanks, the source said.
