North Carolina man involved in police canine death sentenced to 11 years

A 33-year-old North Carolina man was sentenced on Friday to eleven years in prison for his part in a drug crime which resulted in the death of a police canine.

According to a story published Friday at CBS News, a judge sentenced Jamie Gonzalez-Lopez, who pleaded guilty to several drug-related charges, to 135 months in prison.

In July of 2011, an undercover drug operation took place in a Brunswick County, N.C. field.

Gonzalez-Lopez hid the drugs in the field and while he waited for the "buyer" to show up, a drug-sniffing dog was sent into the field to find the cocaine.

Tragedy struck when the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office canine, named "Viper," bit into the package and shook it.

In the process, the Belgian Malinois, a six-year veteran of the force, ingested a fatal amount of the contraband and died as a result.

Following Viper's death in 2011, approximately 200 people showed up to a memorial service in his honor.

RIP Viper.
