U.S. Naval Update Map: Sept. 5, 2012

August 31, Associated Press – (Louisiana) Mississippi River reopens to limited traffic. The Mississippi River reopened to shipping from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to its mouth after being closed August 27 as Hurricane Isaac approached, the Associated Press reported August 31. The U.S. Coast Guard was limiting some traffic as a backlog of vessels, including a cruise ship, waited to enter the river about 90 miles southeast of New Orleans. Authorities said barges had been stranded on the river bank in places because of Isaac‘s storm surge, which plowed up the river and effectively caused the Mississippi to flow backward until winds shifted to the north and pushed water back into the Gulf of Mexico. Isaac‘s rains upriver could bring some relief for the low water problems, though forecasters expect more normal river levels will not return until October.

South Korea: Shale Gas Development Promising September 5, 2012

South Korea designated shale gas development as a "new growth engine" -- a promising industrial sector that the government can support financially, Yonhap reported Sept. 5. The government has also given "new growth engine" status to electricity storage systems, which are large lithium batteries that can store leftover electricity for later use, like at times of peak energy use. Shale gas is expanding as an energy source in the region.

Iran: Tehran Does Not See United States, Israel As Separate - Official September 5, 2012

Iran will retaliate against both U.S. and Israeli interests if it is attacked, an Iranian military commander said Sept. 5, Reuters reported. Iran does not recognize Israel as separate from the United States and on that basis Washington is seen as having taken a threatening stance toward Iran, the commander said. The comments come as a psychological warfare campaign against Iran appears to be under way.

The Afghan Defense Ministry removed or detained hundreds of soldiers from the military as part of an investigation following insider attacks against foreign troops, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Sept. 5, AP reported. The spokesman said many soldiers have incomplete or forged documents but did not say whether any soldiers have connections to insurgent groups. The investigation is a response to the so-called green-on-blue incidents, in which Afghan security forces attacked the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force troops.

Egypt: Military Withdrawing Tanks From Sinai September 4, 2012

The Egyptian military has been replacing heavy tanks deployed in Sinai with light armored vehicles, unnamed security sources said Sept. 4, Reuters reported. Twenty tanks have already been withdrawn from the region, one source said. The presence of the tanks near the Israeli border has raised concerns from Jerusalem, although sources could not confirm that the withdrawal has been motivated by Israeli pressure. The Sinai Peninsula serves as a controlled buffer between Israel and Egypt, but Jerusalem has allowed Cairo recently to use heavymilitary equipment to combat rising militancy in the region.

HealthLeaders Media – (National) Damage from healthcare data breaches spreading. Almost twice as many people were affected by healthcare data breaches in 2011 as in 2010, according to a report released August 29. The total number of breaches dropped by 32 percent to 145 but the number of people affected by those breaches doubled to 10.8 million. The latest tally included the loss of a single back-up tape containing 5 million records. The findings were based on a review of breaches reported to have occurred in 2011 according to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Web site. The self reporting of breaches is a requirement for businesses under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). The data shows California had the highest number of breaches in 2011 with 15, followed by Texas (11), Illinois (8), Florida (7), and New Jersey (7). Breaches that involved the loss of healthcare data affected the most individuals — 6.1 million. Theft affected 2.4 million, unknown cause affected 1.9 million, and loss affected 1.2 million. Unauthorized access, hacking, improper disposal and other combined affected about 464,000 individuals. Access to portable electronic devices such as thumb drives, backup tapes, CDs, DVDs, and X-Ray films accounted for 28 percent of the breaches and affected 8.2 million people. Paper and laptops account for 27 percent and 22 percent of the beaches, respectively, but combined accounted for only 5 percent of the individuals affected by breaches.

August 31, The Register – (International) Philips databases pillaged and leaked second time in a month. Electronics giant Philips was hacked for the second time in a month and its databases raided. Usernames and encrypted passwords were leaked after the breach. It is unclear whether email addresses or the actual contents of corporate emails were included in the records dumped from the company‘s SQL databases. The lifted data was uploaded to various file hosting sites by hacktivists, who used blogs (since taken down by Google‘s Blogspot service) and social networks, using the hashtag labels ―AntiSec‖ and ―LulzSecReborn‖ to spread the word. ―All together there is [sic] well over 200,000 emails with at least 1,000 of them have further vital credentials that could allow others to use the users‘ personal information,‖ according to a Web site run by Anonymous. The site reports that Anonymous-affiliated hackers in Sweden announced the raid. The latest attack follows a smaller leak of a few thousand records from Philips by r00tbeersec, another hacktivist crew, about a week ago.
