A former B-2 stealth bomber engineer was found guilty of selling sensitive military technology to China, the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement on Aug. 10, AFP reported. Noshir Gowadia was found guilty of illegally communicating classified information, as well as illegally retaining defense information following a 40-day trial. Gowadia provided some of the United State’s most sensitive weapons-related designs to the Chinese government for money, Assistant Attorney General for National Security David Kris said in a statement. Gowadia was employed as an engineer with Northrop Grumman Corporation.
Kuwait: U.S. Announces Patriot Missile Sale August 11, 2010
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency told Congress that it plans to sell as many as 209 Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missile-T (GEM-T) interceptors valued at up to $900 million to Kuwait in order to counter missile threats from Iran, Reuters reported Aug. 11.

Russia: LUKoil Resumes Gasoline Supply To Iran August 11, 2010
Russian oil company LUKoil has resumed gasoline sales to Iran, following the discontinuation of deliveries by LUKoil in the spring of 2010, Reuters reported Aug. 11. Sources said LUKoil trading arm Litasco, in partnership with China’s state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong, delivered a 250,000-barrel shipment of gasoline to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas during the week of Aug. 2. A LUKoil spokesman said the delivery fulfilled contracts signed prior to the discontinuation in the spring.
Russia: Air Defense Systems Deployed In Abkhazia August 11, 2010
Russia has deployed S-300 air defense missile systems in Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia region, Russian air force chief Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said Aug. 11, RIA Novosti and Reuters reported. The missile systems will protect the airspace of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in conjunction with other air defense mechanisms deployed by Russian ground forces, Zelin said, adding that similar air defense systems have already been deployed in South Ossetia.

Lebanon: Iran Ready To Help Army August 10, 2010
Irans Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi said Iran is ready to help the Lebanese armed forces, IRNA reported Aug. 10. Roknabadi made the remarks in his meeting with Lebanon’s Commander of the Armed Forces Gen. Jean Kahwagi. Roknabadi said Iran is ready to provide the help in response to a request made by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to equip the countrys army.
Iran: 6,000 Employees, 114 Companies Transferred Out Of Tehran August 11, 2010
About 6,000 employees and 114 companies have been transferred out of Tehran as of Aug. 10, according to Tehran Governor-General Morteza Tamaddon, state-run Mehr news agency reported Aug. 11. He said the transfer is intended to help Tehran reduce its number of residents to 9 million people. In a plan ratified by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, 150,000 people will have to leave Tehran each year to reach the population goal. Currently, 18,000 people have registered for the transfer.

Al Qaeda is enticing scores of former Sunni allies to rejoin the group by paying them more than the monthly salary they currently receive from the Iraqi government, two key U.S.-backed militia leaders stated, the Guardian reported Aug. 11. Al Qaeda leaders are reportedly exploiting the imminent U.S. troop departure by ramping up a membership drive. Sheikh Sabah al-Janabi, a leader of the Awakening Council, also known as the Sons of Iraq, said 100 out of 1,800 members had not collected salaries for the last two months; a clear sign, he said, that they are taking money from their former enemies.

Israel: DM Takes Flotilla Responsibility August 10, 2010
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak took “full responsibility” for Israel’s raid on the Gaza-bound aid flotilla, saying the government had foreseen the potential for violence when it decided to launch the operation, Haaretz reported Aug. 10. Barak took responsibility for everything that took place under his command, including political level orders. Barak stated that on May 26, a draft of the operation was presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet, known as the Forum of Seven. The outline of the operation included an intelligence assessment and a range of possible outcomes, including the possibility of extreme scenarios, Barak said.

Afghanistan: Iran To Host Regional Meeting August 10, 2010
Iran said it would soon host a regional meeting on stabilizing Afghanistan to be attended by the neighbors of the war-ravaged country, AFP reported Aug. 10. The conference would be part of “concrete actions” that Iran is adopting to fight drug-trafficking, extremism and to seek solutions for stability, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said. Mehmanparast stated that the United States was aware how important Tehran was for the stability of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Afghanistan: U.K. To Send More Fighter Jets August 11, 2010
The United Kingdom will deploy two Tornado GR4 fighter jets to Afghanistan to supplement the eight already there and to improve protection for ground troops, British Defense Secretary Liam Fox said Aug. 11, DPA reported. During an unannounced visit to U.K. troops in Helmand province, Fox said U.S. Gen. David Petraeus, who leads the NATO mission in Afghanistan, had requested the additional aircraft. Fox said the fighter jets protect soldiers against improvised explosive devices and provide officers with the necessary “eyes in the sky” to keep troops and local civilians safe.
Afghanistan: Army Reaches Enlistment Goal August 11, 2010
U.S. Gen. David Petraeus congratulated the Afghan Ministry of Defense on Aug. 11 for reaching its goal of having 134,000 trained national army soldiers two months ahead of schedule, CNN reported. Petraeus aid the growth of the national army is encouraging as Afghan troops work together with coalition forces to achieve common goals in the new Afghanistan. Increasing the size and capability of the Afghan security forces is a central element of the joint Afghan-ISAF strategy to increase security for the Afghan people in areas challenged by the insurgency, Petraeus stated.
Afghanistan: German Offensive Prepared August 11, 2010
Acting on instructions from Berlin, senior officers ordered two 600-man German battalions to team up with Afghan soldiers in the coming months and clear Taliban fighters from districts the insurgents now dominate, The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 11. The new German commander of the battalion in Kunduz province expects to begin a series of attacks in October. German commanders are splitting the two battalions off from the 4,400 troops currently in Afghanistan. The new battalions will have enhanced capabilities, such as reconnaissance technology and combat engineers, along with access to artillery support.
