Trooper shot and suspect dead in shootout on I-55
NEW MADRID COUNTY • A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper remains hospitalized and one of four suspects is dead after a shootout during a traffic stop along I-55 in New Madrid County.
Another suspect remained hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries Sunday night in Cape Girardeau, said Trooper Clark Parrott.
The driver and two passengers -- all from Texas -- were arrested...All were charged with second-degree murder, possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute. In addition to the hospitalized suspect, the other two are in custody.
The incident, which occurred about halfway between Sikeston and New Madrid, began about 10 p.m. Saturday when Cpl. Shane Stewart and another trooper stopped a red Ford Expedition for a traffic violation. Stewart was shot while he was talking with one of the four occupants outside the vehicle. The front-seat passenger inside the vehicle shot at Stewart and the bullet penetrated his neck just above Stewart's bullet proof vest. The troopers then shot into the vehicle.
Stewart's injuries are non life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery, Parrott said.
The suspect who was killed was the person who fired the gun that injured Stewart..
Wishing you a quick recovery Trooper Stewart...good work out there!
