November 9, Aviation Week – (International) Proposed rules for exports protect stealth. The U.S. Presidential administration is proposing export control changes that would allow aircraft components to be more freely traded on the global market, while continuing to protect parts designed specifically for the military’s most stealthy aircraft, Aviation Week reported November 9. The move would modify the U.S. Munitions List for what is known as “Category VIII,” which covers aircraft. The change would free up generic parts, components, accessories, and attachments for export “regardless of their significance to maintaining a military advantage for the United States,” according to a November 7 notice in the Federal Register. Those parts would be transferred from the State Department-managed munitions list to a list governed by the Commerce Department.  Source: http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story.jsp?id=news/asd/2011/11/09/01.xml&h eadline=Proposed Rules For Exports Protect Stealth&channel=defense

Turkey: U.S. UAV Base Moved From Iraq November 14, 2011

A U.S. operation using four unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has moved its base from Iraq to Incirlik, Turkey, a Pentagon spokesman said Nov. 14, Reuters reported. Turkey requested the move because U.S. forces must withdrawal from Iraq by the end of 2011, the spokesman said. The UAVs have been performing reconnaissance missions against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and will continue to provide support to the Turkish military against the PKK along its southern border with Iraq, he said. The base’s location changed, but the mission and the support provided to Turkey will remain the same, the spokesman said.
