Marine reservist Jonathan Melaku may be connected to a series of five shootings at military sites in Northern Virginia, law enforcement sources said June 22, The Washington Post reported. One federal source called the evidence against Melaku “strong,” saying it involved ballistic evidence.

India: $2.2 Billion Allocated For Naval Base Expansion June 21, 2011
The Indian Defense Ministry has prepared a 100 billion rupee ($2.2 billion) note for the Cabinet Committee on Security to be used for Phase-IIA of a proposed expansion of the Karwar naval base in Karnataka, Ary News reported June 21. The navy will be able to base 27 major warships at Karwar after the completion of this phase of the project, dubbed “Project Seabird,” including aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, Scorpene attack submarines and other frontline warships.

Russia: German Company To Build Military Training Center June 21, 2011
German defense company Rheinmetall AG Chairman Klaus Eberhardt signed a contract to build a 11,132 million rubles ($397.55 million) combat training center for the Russian ground troops at Mulino in the Nizhniy Novgorod region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, Interfax-AVN reported June 21. Eberhardt signed the deal when Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov visited Magdeburg on June 17. Serdyukov said the center will begin operating in mid-2014 with the company-level facility to be open in 2013 and the facility for battalions to train against each other to open by June 2014.

The Australian contingent of 1,550 troops in Uruzgan will continue to work the same way, training Afghan soldiers until they can take responsibility for security in the province, Gillard said.

Mexico: LFM Leader Sought Alliance With Los Zetas - Police June 22, 2011
