This is how we do it in Texas

An offshoot, pardon the pun, of Ron White's classic on the death penalty in Texas
Victim Shoots and Kills Robber

TEXAS CITY - Early Sunday morning, 60-year old Enrique Herrera of Texas City arrived home from work and was met in his driveway by two armed gunmen who ordered him to "give it up," and he did. But it wasn't his money he gave up. Herrera whipped out his own pistol and opened fire on the two robbers. One of them fired back hitting Herrera in his inner thigh.

Police responded to a call of 'shots being fired' in the 1100 block of 1st Avenue, South where they found Herrera. The two robbers had fled. Officers issued an all-points-bulletin and within minutes Officer D. Heckard stopped a black man walking down the street, sweating profusely, and matching the description of one of the bandits.

Officer Brad Macik, who was also at the scene, while searching the area with his flashlight, discovered something in the grass in an open nearby field.

That something was the other robber, still wearing a ski mask and laying face down, dead, in the field.

Captain Brian Goetschius identified the dead man as 26-year old Lekendrick Deon Nelson of La Marque. 23-year old Jermaine Eugene White, also of La Marque was jailed and charged with Aggravated Robbery and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Both men have previous criminal histories and were known by Texas City officers.

Goetschius told The Police News an autopsy will be performed on Nelson to determine his exact cause of death.

I'll lay money that the cause of death has something to do with bleeding out because of a bullet in his body. Direct stupidity causing indirect cleansing of the human gene pool!

  1. I don't care how you feel about the situation, that was someone's child. He should not have done what he did. I have read some comments on other pages abot this story and it makes me sick that anyone can say that they are glad that someone is dead no matter what was done, that is still someones child. I know that family. No mother or other family member should have to read the comments about how glad someone is that her child is dead no matter what he did.

    1. Anon, you know who else is someone's chid? Enrique Herrera, the man they attempted to rob and severely injured. I'm sorry the family of Nelson is grieving but if that punk had not committed a felony and almost murdered a man in his house, he would be alive. White wil soon face his judge and jury, while Nelson faced a judge a few days ago he can't deceive. Hopefully God showed more mercy on his soul than he deserved.

Mr Herrera, sorry you were put in this position and thank God you are all right. .

  2. To the person above THANK YOU! That was my brother. He shouldn't have done what he did but he didnt deserve to die.Regardless of what these random joe blows think or say he was a good person & anyone who got the chance to know him knew what type of person he was. You never know what a persons going thru to make them go to some extreme so its not fair to judge! May God be with everyone who has something negative to say. R.I.P. Kendrick you will be truely missed.

    1. Anon, see my comments above. I am sorry for your loss and I pray your parents have already gone. There is a reason. My grandparents and parents have both buried children and their is no greater pain for a human to endure.

That being said, a good person doesn't go around robbing people, especially at gunpoint. If he had been at home and not trying to commit a 1st Degree Felony he would be with you now. BTY, if Mr Herrera had died during the robbery and Kendrick survived, he would be looking at a death sentence for Capital Murder. Sorry, not a good person.

  3. It's amazing how we can be so judgmental when we know nothing of a situation other than what is put out there. May God have mercy on YOUR judgmental soul, MikeAT. If you don't know him, how would you know that he "goes around robbing people?" I wish that people were more educated before they chose to speak. How do you know that he was ever taught any other way? He shouldn't have done it, but if you could have a say in this situation, a REAL say, would you be willing to teach him better or let him die the same death? My bet is on die the same death, because we as people don't care that much about the people we coexist with. If you could change it, you'd still put Mr. Herrera firing the shot to end a misguided young man's life. So see, who's to blame? Just a few, or all of us?

    1. “Robbing people”, yes, he was doing that on that evening. And as far as your comments on teaching him, it’s not my job to teach him. It was the job of his family to raise him right. It’s not much to teach someone not to rob someone. I recall the words “Thou shall not steal”. And this was not a ten year old without a hair between his legs but a twenty-six year old man. He made his choice and now he’s paid for it.

Back to something on family. I was transporting a prisoner to jail, homeless 30 something who seemed to know how to handle everything, how to fix all the world’s problems. Except how to keep a roof over his head and not begging for his food. I had to ask him why doesn’t he get his family or friends to help him and his only thing he would say is “OK, let me stay at your place?” I told him no, he was not my responsibility to raise or house nor was anyone else responsible for his own actions. Like our Mr. Nelson. No one else made him go to that man’s house and threaten his life for his money. And the only one responsible for his death is himself.

  4. Give more guns to everyone so more violent creeps and robbers can be removed from our midst! To heck with any sympathy for anyone who robs another at gunpoint only to find they have bitten off more than they can chew. That robber was a violent creep. Who cant understand this? Give everyone guns so all robbers and violent creeps can be removed from society! Nevertheless, may God have mercy on this violent creep's soul.

    2. But upon further reflection, maybe the one who claims to be the surviving brother with his comment above has a point and I am also too quick to judge the deceased would-be armed robber with my comment about removing the violent creeps from our midst. Did the dead armed robber and the homeowner have any on-going or prior interactions that brought all this to pass? Maybe then the dead robber may not meet my technical definition of a violent creep. Also, if this was the robber’s first transgression or trespass then maybe he might garner some sympathy as one of the world’s many tragic figures. But the facts as they have been given by the news media seem to suggest otherwise.

If the news media are wrong, then maybe the brother can set us all straight. This seems as good of a forum to do so as any. I mean he cant get his deceased brother in anymore trouble at this point.

So tell us surviving brother, if it matters at all to you that your brother not be remembered as a would-be felon, did your brother have some misguided reason for attempting to rob this homeowner which cost your brother his life? Clearly, the home owner did not hunt down your bother, your brother reportedly tried to attack the homeowner in the latter’s driveway.

In the end, it is always a waste when these apparently young and foolish criminals do their acts. Regardless of the outcome to the victim, it is such a waste of life to the criminal too. Too bad the criminals are typically too ignorant to realize it all ahead of time, apparently.

Btw, MikeAT, you have a good blog. Thanks.
